suspect dead and the Deputy in critical condition. Deputy Sean
Barnes, a former TDCJ Officer at the James H. Byrd Unit, was shot in
the hand and dragged over 50 feet by Dustin Klander, who attempted
to run over the deputy. Lee Ann Abernathy, a TDCJ officer at the
Polunsky Unit in Livingston, assisted the deputy by returning fire with
the Deputy’s shot gun.
Deputy Barnes attempted to take Klander into custody during an
early morning traffic stop, after the vehicle Klander was driving in was
observed driving with no headlights on in the Trails Ends subdivision.
Lee Ann Abernathy was a "ride along" during the traffic stop and
returned fire using the deputy’s shotgun during the incident.
